Well we finally made it!! An hour delay leaving London, but we're now here in Moscow. Met with our own personal guide Leah yesterday morning for a walking tour of the city. She acquainted us with the Moscow Metro and showed us all the places of interest, except Red Square, Kremlin etc as she wanted to show us some of the more "interesting" architecture. The guided tour lasted about 3 hours and then we were left to our own devices. We decided to head towards the Bolshoi building but a massive thunderstorm put paid to our plans and we had to take shelter in the nearest underpass. We were the only Brits amongst a load of Russians all taking shelter from the rain. After about 45 minutes we decided to brave the elements and do a runner to the GUM shopping mall, which is massive and full of designer shops and cafes just like home. We had a spot of lunch and then headed for Red Square. The weather was still pretty wet so we decided to head back to the hotel, get some dry clothes and then went out for an evening meal. We went for a stroll along Arbat, which is a trendy pedestrianised street full of street performers, etc. We listened to a funky Russian street band before we headed back to the hotel for a couple of beers and some backgammon.
Today we braved the Metro on our own and travelled round the centre of Moscow in the dry. We got some spectacular photos of St Basils, the Kremlin, Lenin's mausoleum and the guards guarding the eternal flame. We will upload the photos just as soon as we can suss out how to do it.
Off into town later this evening for a meal. 2 days left in Moscow before we embark on the Trans Mongolian Railway.
Love to everybody
